Course Description · Numerical Tools in Wind Energy

Keywords: WAsP, WAsP Engineering, EllipSys, HAWC.

Course Responsible: Niels Troldborg

General Course objectives

The focus of the course is to introduce you to various numerical tools developed for wind energy and to provide the necessary knowledge for solving an advanced wind energy related problem with one of the tools.

Learning Objectives

The course has learning objectives for each course subject as listed below.

Introduction to Numerical Tools:

  • List the different numerical tools used in DTU Wind Energy and their typical
  • Explain the basics of selected tools and their operational envelopes
  • Illustrate the concepts of model verification and validation
  • Choose a numerical tool for a given application

Specific Numerical Tool:

  • Apply a selected numerical tool on a predefined setup
  • Set up a selected tool for solving a given problem
  • Analyse the sensitivity of different setups for a given case
  • Select the optimal setup for a given problem
  • Evaluate the uncertainties of the results predicted by a selected tool

Contents

In this course, you will look at an overview of numerical tools in wind energy, physical world vs the model world, measurements and modelling, resolution and scale in modelling, verification and validation of models, sensitivity analysis, uncertainty quantification, rules, guidelines and best practices.

Specific training in one of the following four numerical toolboxes: Wind Resource and Site Assessment for Wind Farm Design (WAsP, WEng, WAT, Fuga), Computational Fluid Dynamics (EllipSys2D/3D), Loads and Aero-elasticity of Wind Turbines (HAWC2) or Systems Engineering tools in Wind Energy (TopFarm).
